Island Lokrum
About the place
The island of Lokrum was first mentioned in 1023 as the place of foundation of the Benedictine abbey and monastery. According to legend, it was at Lokrum that Richard I the Lionheart found salvation from a shipwreck, returning in 1192 from a crusade from Palestine. He partially fulfilled the vow according to which, if he was saved, he would build a church at the place of salvation. He was saved by landing in Lokrum, but at the request of the people of Dubrovnik, he agreed to build a church in the city itself.
